Legal Credit Card Debt Elimination: No Scams, Just Good Sense

You’ve probably seen the commercials on TV or heard them on the radio. They go something like this: “Tired of paying those high-interest credit card bills? We can help you wipe out your credit card debt instantly!” Sadly, most of these ads come from companies whose methods are questionable, if not outright illegal. A few of these companies may actually offer legal credit card debt elimination, but by and large, the best way to do it is to simply be sensible.

The first hurdle is to come up with a plan. The second is to stick with it. There are two basic ways to begin eliminating your credit card debt. You can either begin to knock off the cards with the smallest balances first, or you can begin by paying off the ones with the highest interest rates. Either way, you must first figure out a budget and stay within its bounds. Sticking to a budget will help you free up some cash to direct toward your credit card payments.

The most crucial part of beginning to eliminate credit card debt is to completely cut out your credit card spending. If you keep using them, you’ll never catch up with your balance.

It’s also vital to pay your bill on time, and pay more than the minimum amount. Paying only the minimum doesn’t have an effect on the high interest rates most cards carry and lets the credit card company make huge profits on that interest. However, if you’re concentrating on erasing one bill at a time, then you should pay at least the minimum amount on the others. It’s important not to add late fees on top of your balance.

Another good tip is to ask your creditors to reduce your interest rates. It sometimes happens, and even this small step can save you a good deal of money.

Conversely, be careful of closing a credit card account with an outstanding balance because some creditors will actually raise your interest rate in that event.

By making steady payments above the minimum amount due, you can immediately - and legally - be on the road to credit card debt elimination.
